The myth that leaders are born disintegrated years ago. So if they aren't born with wisdom, instincts, skills and abilities, what's their secret to becoming so effective? Strong leadership candidates view the opportunity to lead as a way of making a difference. They are humble enough to know that it is just the beginning of their journey, “they haven't arrived” as a leader . . . yet. They set themselves on a path of continuous development. “Leadership is, at root, about understanding and managing our own internal experience.”¹ Competent and effective leaders know themselves inside and out. They know what they value, their strengths, and beliefs. Most importantly they challenge their assumptions and personal biases. Our minds can focus on small chunks of information at a time. All the rest of what we know is stored just below the surface of our conscious minds, it is critical that you learn how to access that part of your thinking through the development of personal awareness skills, and self-reflection. There are a number of ways to learn these skills from reading books and articles, experimenting with reflective exercises. Through self awareness often times you become aware of things you'd like to change. There can be habits and attitudes that work against you. The challenge is once you determine what you want to change it's a matter of developing that practice or habit in your every day life. It is helpful to focus on one thing at a time, many people find an accountability partner helpful, as well as setting up daily reminders or personal rituals that create the time and personal space to stop and reflect. If you constantly have that nagging feeling inside, when you make decisions, it may be because you are going against your core values. There is much more to a leaders life than managing your to do list. When you uncover your values you begin to align with what's most important for you and guides you to making confident decisions. Great leaders learn to manage themselves first and self-discovery is an important piece to that puzzle. For a limited time I am offering you a FREE Complementary Coaching Session to set you on the path of self-discovery and moving towards effective leadership.
