It is believed that ADD/ADHD is caused by wiring in the reticular activating system. The reticular formation is at the core of the brain stem, it receives input from the body regarding sight, smell, taste, and other senses. It is also linked to motor functions, awareness, and sleep. is involved in wakefulness, arousal, and consciousness as well as your circadian rhythm. It also coordinates learning and memory. In studies by neuroscientists, they have identified that in people who experience the symptoms of ADD/ADHD the reticular activating system cannot keep up with the demands on it. There is a shortage of connections and the brain cannot process the information fast enough to keep up. The result is a complete shut down where nothing gets processed, which is where many people become frustrated. A dysfunctioning RAS system is essentially like a filter that isn't working properly and is letting too much information through leaving you unable to process it. It creates feelings of overwhelm, it slows your mental processing, affects your ability to gauge time, identify what's important and struggle to pay and sustain your attention. Looking at it from the perspective that an ADHD nervous system works differently it is more like a race car, it's engine has specific needs. If you want that engine to run efficiently and operate to it's full potential, you'd learn that car inside and out so that you could maximize its performance. The same goes with your brain, you've got to know yourself inside and out. Learn all you can about your brain and what it needs to reach peak performance, that is where a coach makes a great partner on the team.
