Congratulations on your promotion! Before you get too deep into the thick of things we recommend you STOP and ask yourself, what is it that I don’t know about managing . . . and don’t even realize it? It may be true that you're a top performer, although; with every new role, there are new challenges and skills to master in order to be effective. We've all been in your shoes. We found it helpful to use our annual performance objectives as a guide for development as well as identifying the core competencies for the position that would enhance our effectiveness. You may also want to identify available resources for developing in those areas and ask your supervisor for feedback. Here are a few questions you might find helpful in developing your management style: What kind of a manager do I want to be? You most likely have experienced a variety of management styles, think about managers or leaders that you consider to be especially successful and effective. What stands out about them? What draws you to them? What kind of environment do they create? How do they treat people? Perhaps they would be open to being a mentor for you. We recommend you be honest with your current skills and abilities. When you go from an individual contributor to managing you have entered into a whole new ball game with a whole lot more players to consider. You may have been promoted because you are a top performer, to remain there you will need a new strategy for you and your team.
